Instructions:
Information on this class start page will support registered OTAWiki users to create their first, contributed MediaWiki page.
- Educators don't need to be "techies" to create Wiki entries or develop wiki projects for completion by their students. Anyone with a user identity on this site can edit most pages on OTAWiki.
- Some pages containing basic information about using this wiki are protected and may only be edited by sysops. (Like this page.)
- Creating a new page is a classical "ill structured problem." There isn't only one right answer. There are many ways to create new Wiki pages. *The easiest way may be to follow the step-by-step directions below or look for more ways to create new MediaWiki pages in the MediaWiki documentation: MediaWiki Guide.
Directly below are some "step by step" instructions for creating an "Educational Internet Resource" entry on OTAWiki. This task is a project-based assignment in OTA-121, Activity 2.2. Creating a New OTAWiki Educational Internet Resource Entry
- Be sure you are signed in and not just browsing the wiki. The login button is in the upper right hand corner, in small print, blue on blue. Obviously programmers weren't concerned with readability for that button.
- Copy the "template" categories (given below these instructions).
- Decide on a name for your new MediaWiki page and type the name into the "Search" box, on the left sidebar of this page.
- Click "Go" to discover if someone else has already used your page name. If no one has already used it, you'll get an option to "create a new page." (You won't see this option unless you are signed in.)
- Paste the copied "template" into the editor window for your new record.
- Fill in the information about your new Educational Internet Resource, try it out by clicking the "Show Preview" button (below), and when it looks right remember to click "Save page".
- Congratulations! You've added your new Educational Internet Resource to OTAWiki. Repeat for as many resources as you want to share with your OTA colleagues.
- Your page(s) now exist in the OTA Wiki, but unless people search or know the name of your page, they won't be able to find them. You still need to link your newly created resource page to your Class Gallery page so others can see it. Follow the directions below the template to complete this second step.

Adding a link to your Class Gallery page
Below these instructions is a page link to the gallery page where you and your colleagues will share links to your resource pages so that everyone in your class (and other classes) can see the resources you have added to this wiki.
- Be sure you are logged in
- Click on the link to your Class Gallery page (below)
- Click to edit the page
- Add the exact title of your resource (if you forgot the exact name, search for your page using the search box)
- Highlight the title and click the underlined Ab button in the editing menu. It will place a double set of brackets around your title which is the code for telling wiki that this is a link to an internal wiki page.
- Add your name and any other pertinent information
- Click the save button at the bottom of the page
- You should see that your page title is now a blue link (if you didn't get the title exactly right, the link will be red, indicating it's an uncreated page)
- Test your link
